Continuous Casting Machine Online Hydrogen Oxygen Cutting Project

On December 18, the commissioning ceremony of the online hydrogen-oxygen cutting project of the continuous casting machine of Liuzhou Iron and Steel Converter Plant was held at the No. 7 slab continuous casting machine in Zone 3, marking that the online hydrogen-oxygen cutting of continuous casting will innovatively replace propane cutting, which is expected to reduce propane gas consumption by 60% and oxygen consumption by 40% each year, further improving quality and reducing costs.

Hydrogen-oxygen cutting technology

Hydrogen-oxygen cutting technology uses electrolysis of water to generate a hydrogen-oxygen mixed gas, which is used to cut continuous casting billets after combustion. Its combustion product is only water, which ensures that there is very little smoke and dust during the entire cutting process, greatly reducing carbon emissions.

“Judging from the trial operation results, oxyhydrogen cutting has shown significant advantages in efficiency improvement, environmental protection, product quality optimization and cost control. At present, 75% of the continuous casters at Liugang Converter Plant have successfully applied this technology. A new energy-saving and environmentally friendly technology,” said He Han, chief engineer of the Production Technology Office of Liuzhou Iron and Steel Converter Plant.

On July 17 this year, the construction of the online hydrogen-oxygen cutting project of the continuous casting machine of Liuzhou Iron and Steel Converter Plant began. After continuous debugging, on September 26, the project was put into use in three continuous casting production areas, with five slab continuous casting machines, one month ahead of schedule.

The online oxyhydrogen cutting project of the continuous casting machine is one of the key projects of the ultra-low emission transformation of Liuzhou Iron and Steel Co., Ltd.’s converter plant. The official commissioning of this project not only reduced the slab cutting gap from 8mm to less than 4mm, effectively reduced production costs, improved the cutting quality of continuous casting billets, reduced the labor intensity of employees, but also greatly reduced carbon emissions, helping to build a “green Liuzhou Iron and Steel Co., Ltd.” At the same time, the successful implementation of this technology in Liuzhou Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. is also an effective practice of clean energy in the metallurgical field, demonstrating Liuzhou Iron and Steel Co., Ltd.’s firm determination to transform into a green one.
